Lubbock High School Class of 1954

Welcome to LHS ’54

Welcome to the Lubbock High School class of 1954 website. We have included a roster with names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Be sure to read and sign the Guestbook.

FLASHBACK!

We often want to reminisce and look back at our younger years. We discovered an extremely interesting website the has almost every issue of The Westerner Newspaper from the 1930s to the current date. One Interesting section is 21 pages long from May of 1954,

The Westerner World (Lubbock, Tex.)
Vol. 20, No. 31, Ed. 1 Friday, May 21, 1954

If you go to the The Westerner World you can click on “Magnify First Page” on the left side menu and it really makes the newspaper readable. Using their control box in the upper left of the page allows you to scroll around on the page or even go to all the other pages in the newspaper. It’s a really neat way to bring back old memories.

“Once a Westerner, Always a Westerner”

“Sportsmanship, then Victory”

Remembering those two mottos will bring you right back to 1954 and the years at Lubbock High School. How fortunate we were to have spent those years in such a special educational environment… outstanding faculty! Music! Art! Theater! Sports! Academics! We really had it all. Those were the years that we all went to one high school, so you  got to know kids from all over Lubbock. Those were the years of peace -after World War II, before Korea and Viet Nam. Our parents encouraged our studies and our extra-curricular activities. We learned about government by running our own elections. We planned our assemblies and participated in them. We encouraged each other’s talents and achievements…

It’s been 68 years since graduation and its still a thrill to drive down 19th Street and see the same beautiful building (now on the National Registry of Historical Places) where we studied, played and made lasting friendships. Meeting on Saturday morning in the cafeteria on Reunion Weekend, renewing old friendships, walking the familiar halls, thinking back on how uncomplicated our lives were then, we lift our spirits and remind ourselves why we are proud to have been Lubbock High School Westerners.

We hope you visit our website often. Feel free to send us your suggestions, additions or corrections, and be sure to make your plans for the 68rd reunion in 2022.

Always,

Marion Aderton Stuart

We enjoyed sounds:  33 RPM records, band and orchestra, multiple choirs, slow dances at sock hops and cotillions. We remember the trends of our times: hot rods, duck tails, flat tops, poodle skirts and saddle oxfords. We remember what seemed important at the time: sports, welcome weekends, seeing and being seen.

We regret the passing of important places: Hi-D-Ho, the Lindsey, the White Pig, the Hub, Hemphill-Wells, White and Kirk and a hundred other wonderful rendezvous places which are erased everywhere but in our fond memories.  Friendships were formed and bonds tied our class together…in truth and in our memories…forever.

Please contact us with any updates to the information we have listed here or if you have any information or clues for other classmates. Your help will be greatly appreciated.  We want to have fun with our website as well as keep everyone posted on the latest gossip and news. Don’t forget to leave a message on the guestbook… we want to know about you and what you think about our efforts.

Westerner Call To Loyalty

"Westerners, put on your chaps,

Buckle on your spurs,

Loosen up the reins of our old fighting Westerners.

Sportsmanship, then victory is the motto of our high,

Come along, you brave old Westerners, we will do or die.

We will gallop over all the sweeping prairie land,

We will fight for biack and gold, true Westerner brand.

Lubbock High in golden letters, we will glorify,

Come along, you brave old Westerners; we will do or die.”

Old Classmate?

Have you been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking...surely I cannot look that old?  You may enjoy this short story, which could be true....

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name.

Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 50 years ago.

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.

After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended LHS.  "Yes," he replied.

"When did you graduate?" I asked.

He answered, "In 1954. Why?"

"You were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"
